Narrative:

Aircraft lost power in cruise at 5500 ft, power reduced to 1000- 1200 RPM. Checked mixture, mags, fuel selector to both. Gauges (fuel) indicated above 1/2 full both tanks. Aircraft filled with fuel 1.9 hour prior to power failure. Tanks were not visually inspected prior to flight due to absence of ladder. Fuel log and fuel gauges indicated adequate fuel. Made uneventful forced landing in open field. No damage to person, property, or aircraft. Pilot alone, no passenger. Aircraft fueled and flown from field without problem. FAA investigating.
