Narrative:

Ship wxyz with MEL defer item 31 xx-02 (a 3 day deferral) 'flight data recorder' was entered in the logbook on mar/sat/92. Contacted maintenance control and they stated that it was 'entered in the computer' mar/sun/92, which is when maintenance starts counting the 3 day limit. I refused to accept aircraft. Maintenance control then directed local sfo maintenance to change deferral placard in aircraft to reflect mar/sun/92 date in order to fly on mar/wed/92. Flew aircraft until approximately AM45Z on wed. Next crew took aircraft after 0001Z on mar/thu/92 without maintenance clearing MEL item #31-xx-02. I flew flts wed sfo-mem. Wed mem-ord, wed ord-dtw on mar/wed/92.
