Narrative:
Trip was en route from sjc to phx. En route, encountered marginal WX. Due to restr areas (edwards) we diverted towards palmdale VOR and inadvertently got into a thunderstorm. Talking to approach and lost communication. Unable to hear instruction clearly to proceed to fox lancaster. Soon after, entered VFR WX and turned back to sjc. Approach stated 'we had caused them difficulty because we did not go where instructed.' however, we were unable to hear clearly because of severe static noise.

Narrative: TRIP WAS ENRTE FROM SJC TO PHX. ENRTE, ENCOUNTERED MARGINAL WX. DUE TO RESTR AREAS (EDWARDS) WE DIVERTED TOWARDS PALMDALE VOR AND INADVERTENTLY GOT INTO A TSTM. TALKING TO APCH AND LOST COM. UNABLE TO HEAR INSTRUCTION CLRLY TO PROCEED TO FOX LANCASTER. SOON AFTER, ENTERED VFR WX AND TURNED BACK TO SJC. APCH STATED 'WE HAD CAUSED THEM DIFFICULTY BECAUSE WE DID NOT GO WHERE INSTRUCTED.' HOWEVER, WE WERE UNABLE TO HEAR CLRLY BECAUSE OF SEVERE STATIC NOISE.
