Narrative:
On climb out the captain questioned our clearance altitude. I said we were cleared to FL160. Passing through 5500 ft ATC questioned what we were cleared to and I responded FL160. We stated that we were VFR and ATC then asked if we wanted a VFR climb to 14000 ft. We confirmed that. ATC then asked us to telephone on our arrival. Note: 1. We were VFR, no observed traffic. 2. No traffic shown on TCASII.
