ATC reported an altitude deviation of approximately 500 ft. We changed to second transponder-encoder and all read ok. Reported transponder-encoder to maintenance, no problems occurred.

Title: ACR MLG ACFT TRANSPONDER ERRONEOUSLY XMITTED THE WRONG ACFT ALT TO ATC.
Narrative: ATC RPTED AN ALTDEV OF APPROX 500 FT. WE CHANGED TO SECOND TRANSPONDER-ENCODER AND ALL READ OK. RPTED TRANSPONDER-ENCODER TO MAINT, NO PROBLEMS OCCURRED.
