Narrative:

I was with my student flying helicopter out of ftw. We were northbound and due west of hicks airport when we decided to land there. We tuned in the CTAF 122.7 listed and noted traffic landing to the north with left traffic for runway 32. We made a radio call identifying our position and intentions. 'Helicopter xx west of the field inbound for landing.' as we approached midfield at 500 ft AGL 1 aircraft called and asked our position. We identified ourselves as directly over the runway midfield. I believe this was the aircraft in question that called for our position and I did not hear again from the aircraft. After crossing midfield we turned right and made a radio call 'helicopter xx on right downwind.' we saw no aircraft and proceeded turning base. We made a call 'helicopter on right base landing east of the taxiway to the grass.' after landing we did some hover work and slope lndgs on the grass to the east and then after clearing ourselves took the active runway and departed to the north. We only made the 1 approach into the field. On my return, I received a message that a mr. A had reported that I had cut him off on final approach and he asked that I call him. I called him that evening and tried to find out what had happened as he saw it and then to let me explain so that maybe we could determine from each others stories what had happened. He told me that if I and the other pilots from my flight school wanted to come to that airport that we were going to have to abide by the way they did things and not make our own traffic patterns and he was quite adamant that I cut in front of him on final. I was unable to talk with this pilot as his ego and his dislike for anyone from another airport or flight school interfering in 'his airspace.' as a pilot, I feel the problem is fixed wing pilots need to be made more aware of helicopter operations. Also the other pilot never made any radio calls as to his position or any kind of communication that could have prevented what the other pilot expressed as a 'close call' although I never saw the other aircraft. I also suspect that the other pilot is not used to working in the vicinity of helicopter operations and possibly he perceived that the helicopter was some how in his way due to him having a higher rate of closure than that of the helicopter. I feel as well that here 1 of the factors is more concerning the idea of it being his airport, and his traffic pattern, and having to deviate in any way was perhaps for him an infraction of his 'space.' an attitude that for defensive drivers or pilots is an attitude of poor choice.

Title: HELI INSTRUCTOR RECEIVES PHONE CALL THAT HE HAD CUT OFF SMA ON FINAL AT UNCTLED ARPT.

Narrative: I WAS WITH MY STUDENT FLYING HELI OUT OF FTW. WE WERE NBOUND AND DUE W OF HICKS ARPT WHEN WE DECIDED TO LAND THERE. WE TUNED IN THE CTAF 122.7 LISTED AND NOTED TFC LNDG TO THE N WITH L TFC FOR RWY 32. WE MADE A RADIO CALL IDENTIFYING OUR POSITION AND INTENTIONS. 'HELI XX W OF THE FIELD INBOUND FOR LNDG.' AS WE APCHED MIDFIELD AT 500 FT AGL 1 ACFT CALLED AND ASKED OUR POS. WE IDENTIFIED OURSELVES AS DIRECTLY OVER THE RWY MIDFIELD. I BELIEVE THIS WAS THE ACFT IN QUESTION THAT CALLED FOR OUR POS AND I DID NOT HEAR AGAIN FROM THE ACFT. AFTER XING MIDFIELD WE TURNED R AND MADE A RADIO CALL 'HELI XX ON R DOWNWIND.' WE SAW NO ACFT AND PROCEEDED TURNING BASE. WE MADE A CALL 'HELI ON R BASE LNDG E OF THE TAXIWAY TO THE GRASS.' AFTER LNDG WE DID SOME HOVER WORK AND SLOPE LNDGS ON THE GRASS TO THE E AND THEN AFTER CLRING OURSELVES TOOK THE ACTIVE RWY AND DEPARTED TO THE N. WE ONLY MADE THE 1 APCH INTO THE FIELD. ON MY RETURN, I RECEIVED A MESSAGE THAT A MR. A HAD RPTED THAT I HAD CUT HIM OFF ON FINAL APCH AND HE ASKED THAT I CALL HIM. I CALLED HIM THAT EVENING AND TRIED TO FIND OUT WHAT HAD HAPPENED AS HE SAW IT AND THEN TO LET ME EXPLAIN SO THAT MAYBE WE COULD DETERMINE FROM EACH OTHERS STORIES WHAT HAD HAPPENED. HE TOLD ME THAT IF I AND THE OTHER PLTS FROM MY FLT SCHOOL WANTED TO COME TO THAT ARPT THAT WE WERE GOING TO HAVE TO ABIDE BY THE WAY THEY DID THINGS AND NOT MAKE OUR OWN TFC PATTERNS AND HE WAS QUITE ADAMANT THAT I CUT IN FRONT OF HIM ON FINAL. I WAS UNABLE TO TALK WITH THIS PLT AS HIS EGO AND HIS DISLIKE FOR ANYONE FROM ANOTHER ARPT OR FLT SCHOOL INTERFERING IN 'HIS AIRSPACE.' AS A PLT, I FEEL THE PROB IS FIXED WING PLTS NEED TO BE MADE MORE AWARE OF HELI OPS. ALSO THE OTHER PLT NEVER MADE ANY RADIO CALLS AS TO HIS POS OR ANY KIND OF COM THAT COULD HAVE PREVENTED WHAT THE OTHER PLT EXPRESSED AS A 'CLOSE CALL' ALTHOUGH I NEVER SAW THE OTHER ACFT. I ALSO SUSPECT THAT THE OTHER PLT IS NOT USED TO WORKING IN THE VICINITY OF HELI OPS AND POSSIBLY HE PERCEIVED THAT THE HELI WAS SOME HOW IN HIS WAY DUE TO HIM HAVING A HIGHER RATE OF CLOSURE THAN THAT OF THE HELI. I FEEL AS WELL THAT HERE 1 OF THE FACTORS IS MORE CONCERNING THE IDEA OF IT BEING HIS ARPT, AND HIS TFC PATTERN, AND HAVING TO DEVIATE IN ANY WAY WAS PERHAPS FOR HIM AN INFRACTION OF HIS 'SPACE.' AN ATTITUDE THAT FOR DEFENSIVE DRIVERS OR PLTS IS AN ATTITUDE OF POOR CHOICE.
