Narrative:

While in position for takeoff, as commuter-ebc on runway 24R. Air carrier- icc was cleared for takeoff on the parallel of 24L. We as commuter ebc understood he clearance a takeoff for us. We read back the clearance as cleared for takeoff for commuter ebc and we proceeded to departure. When switching to departure frequency tower advised departure clearance was for air carrier-icc. Their was no conflict from icc who also thought the clearance was for us, upon arrival at mry, ca, telephoned lax tower to confirm our position. We were told that no discrepancy was noted and all was well. The cause we crew members believe is the continuous problem with similar sounding call signs. Lax tower was extremely busy and the workload for tower operators and flight crew members should not be influenced with this increasing habit of similar call signs. Callback phrase. Reporter states he called after landing as the specifics were not clear. He did not want to find out a problem existed after the fact. He felt supervisor he talked to was not disturbed or upset. Reporter feels controllers at lax are very over loaded and do a superb job under the existing conditions.
