Narrative:

On takeoff when the gear handle was raised the gear stayed down and locked. Returned to dfw for uneventful landing. Maintenance later told me the landing gear door bypass valve was in the bypass position and this prevented the gear from retracting. My first officer remembers this bypass valve being closed on his walk around. I assume someone opened the bypass valve after the first officer did his walk around and did not close the bypass valve.
