Narrative:

Air carrier X on final approach to 9L at fll approximately 15-20 mi on final, on localizer centerline, level at assigned altitude 6000 ft. TCASII gave TA, 1 O'clock/4 mi, followed by 'do not descend.' followed shortly thereafter by 'climb, climb.' TCASII indicated climb needed was 1200 FPM. Autoplt was disconnected and climb was initiated. Conflicting traffic was located visually and appeared to be maneuvering in a dlb (light twin aircraft). We deviated altitude to 6350 ft. The VFR aircraft passed directly underneath us approximately 400 ft below. He did not appear to take any evasive action. Approach control was advised of our altitude deviation and the reason. ATC did not give any traffic advisories.
