Narrative:

On 1/thu/92 I was bringing a widebody transport aircraft to another gate. I was repositioning aircraft from XXX gate to YYY gate. After starting engines our crew obtained taxi clearance from our ramp. I then heard our radio man exclaim 'cleared to the gate.' thinking he was talking to ord ground, I proceeded to move the aircraft onto the taxiway. It was not apparent between the radio man and I that he was talking to ramp control and not ground control until I was on the taxiway. Since there were no conflict situations from aircraft on the taxiway, and since my departure gate was very close to my intended gate of arrival I elected to continue. It was not apparent to me that I did not have radio contact with ground control until I was at the final gate. Factors that should have prevented this situation would have been a more positive communication between the radio man and myself about who he was receiving clearance from.

Narrative: ON 1/THU/92 I WAS BRINGING A WDB ACFT TO ANOTHER GATE. I WAS REPOSITIONING ACFT FROM XXX GATE TO YYY GATE. AFTER STARTING ENGS OUR CREW OBTAINED TAXI CLRNC FROM OUR RAMP. I THEN HEARD OUR RADIO MAN EXCLAIM 'CLRED TO THE GATE.' THINKING HE WAS TALKING TO ORD GND, I PROCEEDED TO MOVE THE ACFT ONTO THE TAXIWAY. IT WAS NOT APPARENT BTWN THE RADIO MAN AND I THAT HE WAS TALKING TO RAMP CTL AND NOT GND CTL UNTIL I WAS ON THE TAXIWAY. SINCE THERE WERE NO CONFLICT SITUATIONS FROM ACFT ON THE TAXIWAY, AND SINCE MY DEP GATE WAS VERY CLOSE TO MY INTENDED GATE OF ARR I ELECTED TO CONTINUE. IT WAS NOT APPARENT TO ME THAT I DID NOT HAVE RADIO CONTACT WITH GND CTL UNTIL I WAS AT THE FINAL GATE.
