Narrative:

While on a VFR flight from snl to hsd, I had to travel from southeast to northwest across the oklahoma city arsa. I was in radio and radar contact with okc approach control. Sundance airpark is approximately 5 mi out of the arsa outer circle. I was cleared to change frequencys by okc approach approximately 4.5 mi southeast of sundance. On this particular day there was very light to no wind. Having been on the CTAF frequency for sundance before talking with okc approach, I learned that most everyone flying that day was using runway 17. I called on the CTAF when 4.5 mi from sundance and declared that I would overfly the field at 2500 ft and enter a right downwind for runway 17. I called over the field, downwind, base and final legs. There was no response from any traffic in the sundance pattern. On short final I noticed a plane departing runway 35. He saw me before I saw him and he had already side-stepped to his right to avoid a collision. The other pilot had already taken evasive action, so I continued on to a normal landing. I estimate that we passed within 200-250 ft horizontally. While on the sundance CTAF frequency neither I nor my passenger heard any other traffic in the pattern, nor did we hear anyone declare their intentions to depart on runway 35. As the PIC, I did fail to visually check the departure end of the runway I intended to land on. I relied too much on other pilots to use correct radio procedures and not enough on my own visual check of the area to ensure separation.

I ESTIMATE THAT WE PASSED WITHIN 200-250 FT HORIZLY. WHILE ON THE SUNDANCE CTAF FREQ NEITHER I NOR MY PAX HEARD ANY OTHER TFC IN THE PATTERN, NOR DID WE HEAR ANYONE DECLARE THEIR INTENTIONS TO DEPART ON RWY 35. AS THE PIC, I DID FAIL TO VISUALLY CHK THE DEP END OF THE RWY I INTENDED TO LAND ON. I RELIED TOO MUCH ON OTHER PLTS TO USE CORRECT RADIO PROCS AND NOT ENOUGH ON MY OWN VISUAL CHK OF THE AREA TO ENSURE SEPARATION.
