Narrative:

We departed jan on schedule. On the climb out odd warnings came on that should not have come on. Within a min we smelled smoke and then within seconds we saw smoke. We declared an emergency and returned to jan. We put on the oxygen and smoke goggles preparing for the worst. But by the time we descended to the traffic pattern and did the emergency checklist the smoke had quit. We made a normal landing. No one was injured or hurt. What maintenance found was a mode selector box for the FD/ap had shorted out. Why it happened we don't know.
