At approximately 120 mi west of slc, received clearance from ATC to cross 40 mi west of slc at 17000. First officer copies 40 west at 14000. At approximately 14500 slc center advised radar contact lost, cleared to slc at 17000. First officer started climb to 17000 and slc center asked for identify and altitude. Replied climbing to 17000. Center requested assigned altitude from last center. Reply was, copied 14000. Center replied, radar contact, cleared to slc, descend to 14000. Recommend crew members reconfirm clrncs.
