Narrative:

While in cruise flight FL350 on J80 from jfk to lax center advised us to make a right turn 20 degree now. We complied. Approximately 1 min later center said descend immediately to FL310. Second transmission I need a better rate down now. Traffic 12 O'clock and 4 mi same altitude. At the time 350 level cruise seat belt sign off smooth air. We never saw traffic and no explanation. A few mins later changed to cleveland center. Still on assigned heading at 310. Requested climb to FL390 and direct air VOR. Rest of trip normal. Note: at time of incident washington center not accepting traffic and ny center very busy. Aircraft all over area.
