Narrative:

Air carrier X was level at 310. We got a TCASII alert showing traffic opposite direction 12 O'clock at 1000 ft below us descending. Center asked the other aircraft Y to expedite descent, and asked us to begin an immediate climb to 330. We passed with 2000 ft separation, and we had climbed 31.5 when the controller cleared us back to 310. Once the TCASII alerted us we had aircraft Y in sight the entire time.
