Narrative:

En route from greenville, sc, to columbus, oh, in sep, I had an alternator belt fail creating complete electrical failure. Landed immediately in VFR conditions at whitesburg airport in colson, ky. Next day when WX over mountains cleared, changed battery and flew airplane to eastern ky regional. Repairs were unable to be made due to parts needed. Mechanic removed old belt, and charged battery overnight. In morning mechanic installed original battery and suggested flying with everything off until needed. Left airport approximately XX30 am next day. Sky clear for bolton field where repairs would be made. Next morning FAA contacted me at the aviation maintenance school I attend saying I violated the rules. I was unaware of this and not informed by mechanic or FAA that this could not be done. The FAA knew that this airplane had alternator problems. I would have gotten a ferry permit if I knew or was informed that I needed one.
