Narrative:

During taxi out for takeoff, we received our load closeout information via radio with ramp personnel. We were advised to come back to the gate to off load 9 people because we were over our maximum weight for takeoff. We did so. This would have put us 1620 pounds over our weight limit using 180 pound/passenger as defined in our company operations bulletin. We refueled, taxied out again only to be told we were again overweight for takeoff. We looked at the numbers they had given us and determined we could safely burn off extra fuel and still be legal in all respects (i.e., reserve, alternate, etc). Rather than going back to the gate and unloading more passenger (3, as I recall) we calculated the numbers ourselves using actual fuel on the gauges, as we had burned a lot during long taxies and holds. We departed without further incident. By our calculations we were approximately 300 pounds under our min takeoff weight at brake release.
