Narrative:

Deviation from the assigned course on an IFR flight from cae to gso. The flight was filed with west virginia (charleston) as its final destination. It was necessary to expedite landing, flight was diverted to greensboro, nc. Aircraft an small aircraft with french national pilot requested my assistance in flying him in IMC. Upon reaching IMC the pilot felt very uncomfortable. Within 45 mins he became almost violent and exhibited uncontrolled behavior. It was bumpy and stormy but we were not in danger. Immediately I tried to calm the other pilot and in order to provide comfort (I actually had no other choice) deviated from my assigned altitude. I explained that to the charlotte, atlanta controllers and when I saw that it was impossible to continue, I requested landing at gso. The other pilot was still out of control, but I managed to keep the aircraft in total control during the ILS approach.
