Narrative:

We had crossed over chardon VOR at 9000 ft and then we were told to descend to 7000 ft. Approximately 30 seconds later the approach control gave us a traffic warning. He said traffic was at our 12:30-1 O'clock at 8500. At that time we were at 8600 ft and saw the traffic approximately 100 ft and to the right of our nose. I was the first officer and it was my leg so I immediately pulled the nose up to stop the descent and climbed back over the traffic. The other aircraft may or may not have been in contact with approach. He was right on the edge of the TCA. The controller made no more comments about the traffic to us in any form. The WX was good VFR clear, 15 mi visibility, sun was getting low but was not a factor. I believe the controller failed to provide separation between us and traffic.
