Narrative:

During taxi operation ground control was contacted at 48 holding short of tango. Clrncs was received to taxi to runway 24L via uniform (outer at lax) an light transport was holding short of runway 24L at 36 and a widebody transport was holding on uniform. Ground control advised 'back in to tango at 40 taxi to 24R via the pad.' a brief discussion with first officer while continuing to taxi ensued as to what was meant by the pad and both agreed it was taxiway 32 around the end of runway 24L. Ground asked if we copied to which first officer simply responded 'we understand' the widebody transport was moving into position as we rolled around runway 24L and contacted tower who then advised we should never cross an active runway. (24L was being used for departures 24R for arrs). Problem could have been solved by reading back clearance and questioning what was meant by the pad. Taxiway 32 is not shown as part of a runway on commercial chart and I don't believe/don't recall hold short lines on taxiway. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information. Callback was placed as part of a structured callback effort on runway incursions. Reporter could offer no explanation, even at this time, as to what is actually meant by 'the pad.' he had no recollection of being given a hold short instruction as part of his revised taxi clearance. He said that he was not familiar with the airport as much as the first officer was. It was the first officer who interpreted what was meant by 'the pad.'

Title: FLT CREW OF COMMUTER ACR IS REBUKED FOR CROSSING AROUND THE END OF RWY 24L AT LAX AFTER BEING CLEARED TO RWY 24L VIA 'THE PAD'. FLT CREW WAS UNSURE OF WHAT WAS MEANT BY 'THE PAD.'

Narrative: DURING TAXI OPERATION GND CTL WAS CONTACTED AT 48 HOLDING SHORT OF TANGO. CLRNCS WAS RECEIVED TO TAXI TO RWY 24L VIA UNIFORM (OUTER AT LAX) AN LTT WAS HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 24L AT 36 AND A WDB WAS HOLDING ON UNIFORM. GND CTL ADVISED 'BACK IN TO TANGO AT 40 TAXI TO 24R VIA THE PAD.' A BRIEF DISCUSSION WITH F/O WHILE CONTINUING TO TAXI ENSUED AS TO WHAT WAS MEANT BY THE PAD AND BOTH AGREED IT WAS TXWY 32 AROUND THE END OF RWY 24L. GND ASKED IF WE COPIED TO WHICH F/O SIMPLY RESPONDED 'WE UNDERSTAND' THE WDB WAS MOVING INTO POS AS WE ROLLED AROUND RWY 24L AND CONTACTED TWR WHO THEN ADVISED WE SHOULD NEVER CROSS AN ACTIVE RWY. (24L WAS BEING USED FOR DEPS 24R FOR ARRS). PROB COULD HAVE BEEN SOLVED BY READING BACK CLRNC AND QUESTIONING WHAT WAS MEANT BY THE PAD. TXWY 32 IS NOT SHOWN AS PART OF A RWY ON COMMERCIAL CHART AND I DON'T BELIEVE/DON'T RECALL HOLD SHORT LINES ON TXWY. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO. CALLBACK WAS PLACED AS PART OF A STRUCTURED CALLBACK EFFORT ON RWY INCURSIONS. RPTR COULD OFFER NO EXPLANATION, EVEN AT THIS TIME, AS TO WHAT IS ACTUALLY MEANT BY 'THE PAD.' HE HAD NO RECOLLECTION OF BEING GIVEN A HOLD SHORT INSTRUCTION AS PART OF HIS REVISED TAXI CLRNC. HE SAID THAT HE WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE ARPT AS MUCH AS THE F/O WAS. IT WAS THE F/O WHO INTERPRETED WHAT WAS MEANT BY 'THE PAD.'
