Narrative:

We were on approach frequency 127.7 at 9000 with a call sign of air carrier xx. We were positively changed to frequency 126.15 and given descent to 6000 ft simultaneously. While passing through 8500 ft for 6000 ft we contacted approach on frequency 126.15 and reported descending to 6000 ft. They queried our altitude and told us to climb immediately to 9000 ft and to report back on frequency 127.7. We complied and no conflict was noted. Approach control was also working air carrier xy. Approach control faulted by issuing the 6000 ft descent to us instead of air carrier xy. We positively read back all instructions and complied. Approach control simply confused aircraft call signs. Fortunately our aircraft was TCAS equipped. We asked controller on frequency 126.15 if there was a problem. Controller stated, 'no problem, no fault'. We ascertain from his statement that we made no error.

Narrative: WE WERE ON APCH FREQ 127.7 AT 9000 WITH A CALL SIGN OF ACR XX. WE WERE POSITIVELY CHANGED TO FREQ 126.15 AND GIVEN DSCNT TO 6000 FT SIMULTANEOUSLY. WE COMPLIED AND NO CONFLICT WAS NOTED. APCH CTL WAS ALSO WORKING ACR XY. APCH CTL FAULTED BY ISSUING THE 6000 FT DSCNT TO US INSTEAD OF ACR XY. WE POSITIVELY READ BACK ALL INSTRUCTIONS AND COMPLIED. APCH CTL SIMPLY CONFUSED ACFT CALL SIGNS. FORTUNATELY OUR ACFT WAS TCAS EQUIPPED. WE ASKED CTLR ON FREQ 126.15 IF THERE WAS A PROBLEM. CTLR STATED, 'NO PROBLEM, NO FAULT'. WE ASCERTAIN FROM HIS STATEMENT THAT WE MADE NO ERROR.
