Narrative:

Two pilot plus relief pilot on 8 hour plus scheduled flight. As captain, I was on customary relief during receipt of domestic clearance nearing landfall over porgy-hopedale routing. Filed flight plan was porgy direct hopedale NA274 mt J551, J545 yee etc dtw. First officer was flying and relief was communicating. Upon my return to flight deck, both pilots mentioned that we had received our domestic clearance. As I found later when thoroughly questioning the pilot communicating, the exact clearance was 'cleared to dtw via NA274.' since this was the initial portion (common portion) of the route filed and displayed on the FMS, neither pilot picked up on the fact that the non-common portion was not as filed and loaded into the FMS. I resumed communicating and made a standard position report over wabash VORTAC estimating chiboo and stating val D'or as next position. Center did not notice that val D'or was incorrect for NA274 routing. Passing chiboo (in radar contact) center noticed we were outbnd on J551 and corrected us. Not only does NA274 form the common portion but also uses J551 as the jet route designator for over half the route. I would strongly suggest the use of some term such as 'full route clearance' or similar alerting device when the flight plan issued by center is not the filed flight plan, especially when most of the route follows the same arwy. For my part, in the future, I intend to review all clrncs taken in my absence, in excrutiating detail. Filed: progy-ho-NA274 (J551)-ywk-NA274(J551)-mt-J551-vo-J545-yee var dtw. Cleared: porgy-ho-NA274 (J551)-ywk- NA274 (J551)-mt direct yxi-J597-yqo var dtw.

Title: HEADING TRACK DEVIATION ON NONCOMMON PORTION OF 'NA' TRACK.

Narrative: TWO PLT PLUS RELIEF PLT ON 8 HR PLUS SCHEDULED FLT. AS CAPT, I WAS ON CUSTOMARY RELIEF DURING RECEIPT OF DOMESTIC CLRNC NEARING LANDFALL OVER PORGY-HOPEDALE RTING. FILED FLT PLAN WAS PORGY DIRECT HOPEDALE NA274 MT J551, J545 YEE ETC DTW. F/O WAS FLYING AND RELIEF WAS COMMUNICATING. UPON MY RETURN TO FLT DECK, BOTH PLTS MENTIONED THAT WE HAD RECEIVED OUR DOMESTIC CLRNC. AS I FOUND LATER WHEN THOROUGHLY QUESTIONING THE PLT COMMUNICATING, THE EXACT CLRNC WAS 'CLRED TO DTW VIA NA274.' SINCE THIS WAS THE INITIAL PORTION (COMMON PORTION) OF THE RTE FILED AND DISPLAYED ON THE FMS, NEITHER PLT PICKED UP ON THE FACT THAT THE NON-COMMON PORTION WAS NOT AS FILED AND LOADED INTO THE FMS. I RESUMED COMMUNICATING AND MADE A STANDARD POS RPT OVER WABASH VORTAC ESTIMATING CHIBOO AND STATING VAL D'OR AS NEXT POS. CTR DID NOT NOTICE THAT VAL D'OR WAS INCORRECT FOR NA274 RTING. PASSING CHIBOO (IN RADAR CONTACT) CTR NOTICED WE WERE OUTBND ON J551 AND CORRECTED US. NOT ONLY DOES NA274 FORM THE COMMON PORTION BUT ALSO USES J551 AS THE JET RTE DESIGNATOR FOR OVER HALF THE RTE. I WOULD STRONGLY SUGGEST THE USE OF SOME TERM SUCH AS 'FULL RTE CLRNC' OR SIMILAR ALERTING DEVICE WHEN THE FLT PLAN ISSUED BY CTR IS NOT THE FILED FLT PLAN, ESPECIALLY WHEN MOST OF THE RTE FOLLOWS THE SAME ARWY. FOR MY PART, IN THE FUTURE, I INTEND TO REVIEW ALL CLRNCS TAKEN IN MY ABSENCE, IN EXCRUTIATING DETAIL. FILED: PROGY-HO-NA274 (J551)-YWK-NA274(J551)-MT-J551-VO-J545-YEE VAR DTW. CLRED: PORGY-HO-NA274 (J551)-YWK- NA274 (J551)-MT DIRECT YXI-J597-YQO VAR DTW.
