Narrative:

As I was taxiing into position for takeoff, a company aircraft advised tower that our APU exhaust was smoking. First officer advised tower that we needed to return to gate. Tower cleared us to taxi down the runway and clear the runway at taxiway C3. Then she changed the clearance to taxi down the runway to C7 (later the controller said that she said C6. I heard C7, first officer acknowledged C7). 2 company aircraft on approach had to go around while we taxied down the runway. While this was occurring my priorities were ensure that the aircraft is not on fire. Since we were taxiing down the runway at a high speed, the possibility of an F/a initiated evacuate/evacuation had to be prevented. Clear the runway as soon as possible to minimize our disruption of the traffic flow. I was paying more attention to possible fire than to runway turnoff because it was the prudent thing to do.

Title: OBSERVER FROM ANOTHER ACFT ADVISED FLT CREW OF MLG THEIR APU WAS SMOKING. RETURNING TO GATE FLT CREW OVERSHOT ASSIGNED RWY TURNOFF CAUSING 2 ACFT TO GO AROUND.

Narrative: AS I WAS TAXIING INTO POS FOR TKOF, A COMPANY ACFT ADVISED TWR THAT OUR APU EXHAUST WAS SMOKING. F/O ADVISED TWR THAT WE NEEDED TO RETURN TO GATE. TWR CLRED US TO TAXI DOWN THE RWY AND CLR THE RWY AT TXWY C3. THEN SHE CHANGED THE CLRNC TO TAXI DOWN THE RWY TO C7 (LATER THE CTLR SAID THAT SHE SAID C6. I HEARD C7, F/O ACKNOWLEDGED C7). 2 COMPANY ACFT ON APCH HAD TO GO AROUND WHILE WE TAXIED DOWN THE RWY. WHILE THIS WAS OCCURRING MY PRIORITIES WERE ENSURE THAT THE ACFT IS NOT ON FIRE. SINCE WE WERE TAXIING DOWN THE RWY AT A HIGH SPD, THE POSSIBILITY OF AN F/A INITIATED EVAC HAD TO BE PREVENTED. CLR THE RWY ASAP TO MINIMIZE OUR DISRUPTION OF THE TFC FLOW. I WAS PAYING MORE ATTN TO POSSIBLE FIRE THAN TO RWY TURNOFF BECAUSE IT WAS THE PRUDENT THING TO DO.
