Narrative:

It was a nice night with good visibility and no ceiling, so decided to practice lndgs after tower ceased operations. I am a flight instrument and had a non-rated person in the left seat. About 1 hour prior to the flight (and the tower closing) I obtained the current ATIS for wind velocity and direction. I did not again listen to ATIS after the tower closed which normally contains little information about tower hours and ARTCC frequencys. We departed runway 23, flew around the local area for 10-15 mins and returned for takeoffs and lndgs. The non-rated person in the left seat was flying at this point. Turning base to final and trying to activate the lights, I couldn't seem to pick the runway out by aligning with lights. We got lined up, but couldn't determine if lights for our runway (17) were on. Things didn't look right on short final. We were behind the power curve and decided it was too late to go around. We landed and decided to immediately exit the runway. We dialed in ATIS and found runway 17 to be temporarily closed. Had I called FSS and obtained a WX briefing, although not required by far's for local flight, I probably would have been informed of the closure. Should also not have assumed ATIS broadcast after tower closed to contain the usual information. Also, since the field is basically uncontrolled after tower closes, you are not required to have a radio and would not have received ATIS. Possible a temporarily placed 'X' on the closed runway could have prevented the mishap. I make no excuses--it was a stupid mistake and in the future obtain all available information pertaining to my flight.

Title: SMA ON PLEASURE FLT LANDS ON CLOSED RWY.

Narrative: IT WAS A NICE NIGHT WITH GOOD VISIBILITY AND NO CEILING, SO DECIDED TO PRACTICE LNDGS AFTER TWR CEASED OPS. I AM A FLT INSTR AND HAD A NON-RATED PERSON IN THE LEFT SEAT. ABOUT 1 HR PRIOR TO THE FLT (AND THE TWR CLOSING) I OBTAINED THE CURRENT ATIS FOR WIND VELOCITY AND DIRECTION. I DID NOT AGAIN LISTEN TO ATIS AFTER THE TWR CLOSED WHICH NORMALLY CONTAINS LITTLE INFO ABOUT TWR HRS AND ARTCC FREQS. WE DEPARTED RWY 23, FLEW AROUND THE LCL AREA FOR 10-15 MINS AND RETURNED FOR TKOFS AND LNDGS. THE NON-RATED PERSON IN THE LEFT SEAT WAS FLYING AT THIS POINT. TURNING BASE TO FINAL AND TRYING TO ACTIVATE THE LIGHTS, I COULDN'T SEEM TO PICK THE RWY OUT BY ALIGNING WITH LIGHTS. WE GOT LINED UP, BUT COULDN'T DETERMINE IF LIGHTS FOR OUR RWY (17) WERE ON. THINGS DIDN'T LOOK RIGHT ON SHORT FINAL. WE WERE BEHIND THE PWR CURVE AND DECIDED IT WAS TOO LATE TO GO AROUND. WE LANDED AND DECIDED TO IMMEDIATELY EXIT THE RWY. WE DIALED IN ATIS AND FOUND RWY 17 TO BE TEMPORARILY CLOSED. HAD I CALLED FSS AND OBTAINED A WX BRIEFING, ALTHOUGH NOT REQUIRED BY FAR'S FOR LCL FLT, I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN INFORMED OF THE CLOSURE. SHOULD ALSO NOT HAVE ASSUMED ATIS BROADCAST AFTER TWR CLOSED TO CONTAIN THE USUAL INFO. ALSO, SINCE THE FIELD IS BASICALLY UNCONTROLLED AFTER TWR CLOSES, YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO HAVE A RADIO AND WOULD NOT HAVE RECEIVED ATIS. POSSIBLE A TEMPORARILY PLACED 'X' ON THE CLOSED RWY COULD HAVE PREVENTED THE MISHAP. I MAKE NO EXCUSES--IT WAS A STUPID MISTAKE AND IN THE FUTURE OBTAIN ALL AVAILABLE INFO PERTAINING TO MY FLT.
