Narrative:

On taxi-out, aircraft was cleared to btr runway 13. As we approached the end of runway 13, as best that we could determine, the concrete taxiway gave way to an unmarked taxiway of asphalt. We could not determine if this was part of the taxiway because it had no visible markings; i.e., centerline, sign, etc, so we followed the runway 13 sign and held short of the runway. We contacted tower for takeoff clearance and were asked if we would like the 'entire' runway for takeoff. From my chart, I could not determine that we were not in the proper position. There were no signs to denote our location and the runway markings denoted that we were at the end of runway 13. There was additional runway beyond the threshold; however, all indications, arrow, available to us suggested that this was the displaced threshold annotated in the chart and that takeoff was to be made form the end of the runway and not the displaced threshold end. Takeoff was made using full power and liftoff occurred with approximately 2000' remaining. I strongly urge that the asphalt strip be marked both by centerline strip and taxi lights and a sign denoting the increased length of 13 should be made available. In a heavy takeoff condition, this loss of 1200' could become critical. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: reporter indicated no lights on the asphalt part of the taxiway for night taxi. Suggested that signs, arrows to runway, centerline taxiway lights be installed.

Title: FLT CREW OF MLG TOOK OFF RWY 13 AT BTF AT THE INTERSECTION OF THE STUB TXWY. DID NOT USE OVERRUN AREA BECAUSE OF LACK OF TXWY AND RWY DIRECTION SIGNS.

Narrative: ON TAXI-OUT, ACFT WAS CLRED TO BTR RWY 13. AS WE APCHED THE END OF RWY 13, AS BEST THAT WE COULD DETERMINE, THE CONCRETE TXWY GAVE WAY TO AN UNMARKED TXWY OF ASPHALT. WE COULD NOT DETERMINE IF THIS WAS PART OF THE TXWY BECAUSE IT HAD NO VISIBLE MARKINGS; I.E., CENTERLINE, SIGN, ETC, SO WE FOLLOWED THE RWY 13 SIGN AND HELD SHORT OF THE RWY. WE CONTACTED TWR FOR TKOF CLRNC AND WERE ASKED IF WE WOULD LIKE THE 'ENTIRE' RWY FOR TKOF. FROM MY CHART, I COULD NOT DETERMINE THAT WE WERE NOT IN THE PROPER POS. THERE WERE NO SIGNS TO DENOTE OUR LOCATION AND THE RWY MARKINGS DENOTED THAT WE WERE AT THE END OF RWY 13. THERE WAS ADDITIONAL RWY BEYOND THE THRESHOLD; HOWEVER, ALL INDICATIONS, ARROW, AVAILABLE TO US SUGGESTED THAT THIS WAS THE DISPLACED THRESHOLD ANNOTATED IN THE CHART AND THAT TKOF WAS TO BE MADE FORM THE END OF THE RWY AND NOT THE DISPLACED THRESHOLD END. TKOF WAS MADE USING FULL PWR AND LIFTOFF OCCURRED WITH APPROX 2000' REMAINING. I STRONGLY URGE THAT THE ASPHALT STRIP BE MARKED BOTH BY CENTERLINE STRIP AND TAXI LIGHTS AND A SIGN DENOTING THE INCREASED LENGTH OF 13 SHOULD BE MADE AVAILABLE. IN A HVY TKOF CONDITION, THIS LOSS OF 1200' COULD BECOME CRITICAL. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: RPTR INDICATED NO LIGHTS ON THE ASPHALT PART OF THE TXWY FOR NIGHT TAXI. SUGGESTED THAT SIGNS, ARROWS TO RWY, CENTERLINE TXWY LIGHTS BE INSTALLED.
