Narrative:

Coming into lax our flight plan read, 'J-60 hector ...lax.' I did not see a STAR filed and being a new release I interpreted it to read J-60, hel, J-60 direct lax. So, I flew J-60 into lax, or at least towards it. My first officer became excited and said we were to be going direct lax VOR. I told him, I have never in my 15 yrs gone direct to lax VOR, ever...so, in lieu of a STAR arrival I kept on J-60. In reality, the new release actually meant direct lax after hector VOR. The release should be easier to interpret than it is, and lax center/approach is so busy when we asked them what did they want us to do the controller said, as usually 'intercept 25L localizer and track inbound.' as to a STAR? Controller said just fly the localizer and we'd be sequenced. Lax is a true mad house.
