Narrative:
My first officer was flying, level at 11000', approximately 35 mi north of gso when ZDC called traffic Y at 9500'. We received a frequency change from ZDC to gso approach control, and just as I finished writing the frequency down, I saw a twin engine aircraft Y in front of us and it looked like it was climbing right into us. I put my hands on the yoke and pulled up very abruptly as I expected to hit the twin engine aircraft. I had never changed frequencys, so I told ZDC we had a near miss and they responded that the traffic was 500' below us. Injuries were sustained. A priority landing was made into gso. I phoned ZDC to discuss the problem. Now that I have had time to think, I believe that gso and ZDC did not coordination the VFR twin, or notice that this twin was climbing. I wished I had TCAS in this medium large transport.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NMAC BETWEEN ACR MLG AND LIGHT TWIN 35 NORTH OF GSO.
Narrative: MY F/O WAS FLYING, LEVEL AT 11000', APPROX 35 MI N OF GSO WHEN ZDC CALLED TFC Y AT 9500'. WE RECEIVED A FREQ CHANGE FROM ZDC TO GSO APCH CTL, AND JUST AS I FINISHED WRITING THE FREQ DOWN, I SAW A TWIN ENG ACFT Y IN FRONT OF US AND IT LOOKED LIKE IT WAS CLBING RIGHT INTO US. I PUT MY HANDS ON THE YOKE AND PULLED UP VERY ABRUPTLY AS I EXPECTED TO HIT THE TWIN ENG ACFT. I HAD NEVER CHANGED FREQS, SO I TOLD ZDC WE HAD A NEAR MISS AND THEY RESPONDED THAT THE TFC WAS 500' BELOW US. INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. A PRIORITY LNDG WAS MADE INTO GSO. I PHONED ZDC TO DISCUSS THE PROB. NOW THAT I HAVE HAD TIME TO THINK, I BELIEVE THAT GSO AND ZDC DID NOT COORD THE VFR TWIN, OR NOTICE THAT THIS TWIN WAS CLBING. I WISHED I HAD TCAS IN THIS MLG.
