Narrative:

The event which I am reporting was an act of apparent malicious damage to air carrier airlines aircraft while parked at gate at oak. I was captain of the inbound flight which arrived and parked at gate. After the passenger deplaned, my first officer preceded me out of the cockpit and walked across the ramp to air carrier operations. I remained a few mins talking with the F/a before leaving the aircraft. To my knowledge, the only people remaining onboard at that time were the 3 F/a's. I was aware that the aircraft was scheduled to remain on the ground for approximately 2 1/2 hours before being picked up by another crew for a flight to den. These 3 F/a's were to continue on the den segment and were remaining on board, a normal situation. My first officer and I were scheduled for a 3 1/2 hour break before taking a different aircraft to bur and returning to oak. It was during this time period that I became aware of some damage done to a company aircraft by overhearing conversation by station personnel. Upon inquiring further, I found out that when the outbnd crew for the flight to den entered the cockpit of aircraft medium large transport to preflight, they found the first officer's ADI smashed and the outer glass cover broken in several places. The aircraft was a new series. Upon hearing this, my first officer and I secured permission from the outbnd captain to view the damage. The instrument was rendered useless and maintenance put a cost of replacement on this item. The F/a's, who were on and off the aircraft during the 2 1/2 hour ground time, stated that they remained mostly in the aft section. They were aware of ground servicing personnel coming and going about their business, but noticed nothing unusual. One point I would like to make is that when I left the aircraft, I did not close the cockpit door behind me. When the new crew arrived several hours later, they had to unlock the cockpit door, and that is when they discovered the damage. One other point: I have absolutely no one to suspect nor any fingers to point in this situation. This is the first time in 23 yrs of service with air carrier that I have ever heard or seen anything of this nature. I realize this is not an in-flight event which NASA ASRS reports usually involve. I am rendering this report at the suggestion of my alpa reps.

Title: MLG PARKED AT GATE FOUND TO HAVE DAMAGED ADI (ATTITUDE DIRECTION INDICATOR).

Narrative: THE EVENT WHICH I AM RPTING WAS AN ACT OF APPARENT MALICIOUS DAMAGE TO ACR AIRLINES ACFT WHILE PARKED AT GATE AT OAK. I WAS CAPT OF THE INBND FLT WHICH ARRIVED AND PARKED AT GATE. AFTER THE PAX DEPLANED, MY F/O PRECEDED ME OUT OF THE COCKPIT AND WALKED ACROSS THE RAMP TO ACR OPS. I REMAINED A FEW MINS TALKING WITH THE F/A BEFORE LEAVING THE ACFT. TO MY KNOWLEDGE, THE ONLY PEOPLE REMAINING ONBOARD AT THAT TIME WERE THE 3 F/A'S. I WAS AWARE THAT THE ACFT WAS SCHEDULED TO REMAIN ON THE GND FOR APPROX 2 1/2 HRS BEFORE BEING PICKED UP BY ANOTHER CREW FOR A FLT TO DEN. THESE 3 F/A'S WERE TO CONTINUE ON THE DEN SEGMENT AND WERE REMAINING ON BOARD, A NORMAL SITUATION. MY F/O AND I WERE SCHEDULED FOR A 3 1/2 HR BREAK BEFORE TAKING A DIFFERENT ACFT TO BUR AND RETURNING TO OAK. IT WAS DURING THIS TIME PERIOD THAT I BECAME AWARE OF SOME DAMAGE DONE TO A COMPANY ACFT BY OVERHEARING CONVERSATION BY STATION PERSONNEL. UPON INQUIRING FURTHER, I FOUND OUT THAT WHEN THE OUTBND CREW FOR THE FLT TO DEN ENTERED THE COCKPIT OF ACFT MLG TO PREFLT, THEY FOUND THE F/O'S ADI SMASHED AND THE OUTER GLASS COVER BROKEN IN SEVERAL PLACES. THE ACFT WAS A NEW SERIES. UPON HEARING THIS, MY F/O AND I SECURED PERMISSION FROM THE OUTBND CAPT TO VIEW THE DAMAGE. THE INSTRUMENT WAS RENDERED USELESS AND MAINT PUT A COST OF REPLACEMENT ON THIS ITEM. THE F/A'S, WHO WERE ON AND OFF THE ACFT DURING THE 2 1/2 HR GND TIME, STATED THAT THEY REMAINED MOSTLY IN THE AFT SECTION. THEY WERE AWARE OF GND SVCING PERSONNEL COMING AND GOING ABOUT THEIR BUSINESS, BUT NOTICED NOTHING UNUSUAL. ONE POINT I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE IS THAT WHEN I LEFT THE ACFT, I DID NOT CLOSE THE COCKPIT DOOR BEHIND ME. WHEN THE NEW CREW ARRIVED SEVERAL HRS LATER, THEY HAD TO UNLOCK THE COCKPIT DOOR, AND THAT IS WHEN THEY DISCOVERED THE DAMAGE. ONE OTHER POINT: I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO ONE TO SUSPECT NOR ANY FINGERS TO POINT IN THIS SITUATION. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN 23 YRS OF SVC WITH ACR THAT I HAVE EVER HEARD OR SEEN ANYTHING OF THIS NATURE. I REALIZE THIS IS NOT AN INFLT EVENT WHICH NASA ASRS RPTS USUALLY INVOLVE. I AM RENDERING THIS RPT AT THE SUGGESTION OF MY ALPA REPS.
