Narrative:

We left nassau international airport on a DVFR flight plan as a 'flight of 2.' the lead aircraft was handling communications and squawking his transponder. Apparently the transponder failed. He contacted ZMA and they advised us they could not see us on radar. We proceeded filed to ft pierce where we cleared customs. The customs officer advised us that ZMA wanted to talk to us. We called and the man said we had crossed the d-zone west/O a transponder. We were also told that they did not find our flight plan until after we landed (even though we opened it on nassau radio). I told the man that I was following the lead aircraft and could not hear him transmitting to the lead aircraft. WX made it necessary to continue as filed.
