Narrative:
First officer's leg and he flew J-86 off of bld VOR (094 degree right) vice mead 8 departure as assigned (bld 108 degree right to intercept pgs 265 degree right). Both rtes go to pgs and he misinterpreted the clearance. I didn't notice until 5-8 mi off course. He then overshot pgs right by 3-5 mi when correcting after discovery of deviation. I obviously wasn't paying enough attention...first officer is very experienced (he's already passed captain upgrade) so unlike a new guy who you always watch out for...I was simply complacent.
