Narrative:

In 3/91, we were operating flight srq to pit. We had pushed back on schedule and departed within 5 mins of pushback. Out of FL240 we received an ACARS message to contact srq operations. We were advised of a bag that had been placed on the aircraft by a couple (last name XXXX) who consequently did not board. At this time we were not told if this was a 'profile' passenger, so we advised srq we were returning, upon when the first officer advised me of our overweight condition. We elected to go into tpa since we had mechanics that could do an overweight landing check. All descent and landing profiles were normal. We were advised on descent that this was not a profile passenger and if we wanted, we could elect to continue, but I elected to land as a precaution. There were no emergency actions taken--only thing we asked was, in this situation, would we be required to park away from the gate. We were allowed to park at the gate. Company tried to get in touch with us trough the tower, but got a recording. Often ACARS takes a bit of time to be relayed to us.

Title: ACR MLG DIVERTED TO ALTERNATE WHEN THE FLT CREW WAS ADVISED THEY HAD BAGGAGE ON BOARD FOR PASSENGERS WHO WERE NOT ON THE ACFT.

Narrative: IN 3/91, WE WERE OPERATING FLT SRQ TO PIT. WE HAD PUSHED BACK ON SCHEDULE AND DEPARTED WITHIN 5 MINS OF PUSHBACK. OUT OF FL240 WE RECEIVED AN ACARS MESSAGE TO CONTACT SRQ OPS. WE WERE ADVISED OF A BAG THAT HAD BEEN PLACED ON THE ACFT BY A COUPLE (LAST NAME XXXX) WHO CONSEQUENTLY DID NOT BOARD. AT THIS TIME WE WERE NOT TOLD IF THIS WAS A 'PROFILE' PAX, SO WE ADVISED SRQ WE WERE RETURNING, UPON WHEN THE F/O ADVISED ME OF OUR OVERWT CONDITION. WE ELECTED TO GO INTO TPA SINCE WE HAD MECHS THAT COULD DO AN OVERWT LNDG CHK. ALL DSNT AND LNDG PROFILES WERE NORMAL. WE WERE ADVISED ON DSNT THAT THIS WAS NOT A PROFILE PAX AND IF WE WANTED, WE COULD ELECT TO CONTINUE, BUT I ELECTED TO LAND AS A PRECAUTION. THERE WERE NO EMER ACTIONS TAKEN--ONLY THING WE ASKED WAS, IN THIS SITUATION, WOULD WE BE REQUIRED TO PARK AWAY FROM THE GATE. WE WERE ALLOWED TO PARK AT THE GATE. COMPANY TRIED TO GET IN TOUCH WITH US TROUGH THE TWR, BUT GOT A RECORDING. OFTEN ACARS TAKES A BIT OF TIME TO BE RELAYED TO US.
