Narrative:
Took the runway for departure; set lights for takeoff; brought hands down to the thrust levers and just as I started to move them; 'ding EICAS message rud system 1 inoperative' I closed the thrust levers; exited the runway and called maintenance. We reset the system; operations check [was] good. Then took off for ZZZ.
