Narrative:

I was training a developmental controller during this situation. Medium large transport X straight-in ILS 32 approach. Mlt Y was attempted to be turned on final in front of medium large transport X. Medium large transport Y was wide on the downwind and slow to turn and descend. As the situation was developing we discussed the action to take if this plan wasn't going to work. I told the developmental to break the medium large transport X out. He stumbled over his words and finally turned medium large transport X to a 270 degree heading. It wasn't working so I broke in and turned medium large transport X to a 180 degree heading and expedited his climb to 4000'. Then I turned medium large transport Y to a 360 degree heading and descended him to 2500'. This was reported to the supervisor who did not see the occurrence. The supervisor then went to the assistant manager of operations (amo) who was in the TRACON observing the operations and saw the occurrence. The smo said there was course divergence between the 2 aircraft. The subject was then dropped.
