Approximately 10 - 15 minutes after departure; [I] started hearing engine backfire plus smoke coming into the cabin. Requested priority handling and returned to land at ZZZ on xxl. Right alt smelt of burnt rubber/smoke- no irregular voltage/amp indication in cockpit. Waiting for mechanical inspection.
