Narrative:
Not 100% sure. It doesn't seem like there is any rhyme or reason when fume events occur. The smell wasn't a dirty sock [smell]; but rather a hot metal type smell which threw me off. I suppose I could have aborted the takeoff when we smelled it. Again; not having smelled the hot metal smell before; I wasn't thinking it was a necessarily a fume event at that exact second. Once I had a reaction to it; then I knew it was something abnormal.
