Narrative:

There we were, on a heading to final at 4000'. I saw the field (beacon and runways) and pointed it out to my first officer, who reported it to the approach controller. We were told to 'proceed visually to the field.' unfortunately, what I heard was, 'cleared for the visibility.' at this time, the first officer left the ATC frequency to talk to the company. As I was lining up on final, my first officer came back up and commented that it looked like there was a power outage at the terminal and asked if we were cleared for the visibility, or still supposed to be at 4000'. (By this time I was descending through 2500'.) then it hit me--the field I wanted was about 12 mi ese of our present position (final for 9R at ohio state instead of final for 10R at cmh). I immediately climbed and headed for cmh. Passing through 3500', we were cleared for the visibility approach. Nothing was said about our error. Had I used any of the electronic aids we had tuned, this wouldn't have happened. However, it was late in a long day, the first good VFR leg out of several days of low IFR, and I was expecting a visibility to 1 of 2 e-w parallel runways. Sound familiar? I used to wonder how someone could land at the wrong airport--now I know. All you have to be is a little complacency and a little tired.

Title: CAPT STARTED DESCENT BEFORE CLEARED AND APCHED OSU INSTEAD OF CMH. FLT CREW CAUGHT THE ERROR AND PROCEEDED TO CMH.

Narrative: THERE WE WERE, ON A HDG TO FINAL AT 4000'. I SAW THE FIELD (BEACON AND RWYS) AND POINTED IT OUT TO MY F/O, WHO RPTED IT TO THE APCH CTLR. WE WERE TOLD TO 'PROCEED VISUALLY TO THE FIELD.' UNFORTUNATELY, WHAT I HEARD WAS, 'CLRED FOR THE VIS.' AT THIS TIME, THE F/O LEFT THE ATC FREQ TO TALK TO THE COMPANY. AS I WAS LINING UP ON FINAL, MY F/O CAME BACK UP AND COMMENTED THAT IT LOOKED LIKE THERE WAS A PWR OUTAGE AT THE TERMINAL AND ASKED IF WE WERE CLRED FOR THE VIS, OR STILL SUPPOSED TO BE AT 4000'. (BY THIS TIME I WAS DSNDING THROUGH 2500'.) THEN IT HIT ME--THE FIELD I WANTED WAS ABOUT 12 MI ESE OF OUR PRESENT POS (FINAL FOR 9R AT OHIO STATE INSTEAD OF FINAL FOR 10R AT CMH). I IMMEDIATELY CLBED AND HEADED FOR CMH. PASSING THROUGH 3500', WE WERE CLRED FOR THE VIS APCH. NOTHING WAS SAID ABOUT OUR ERROR. HAD I USED ANY OF THE ELECTRONIC AIDS WE HAD TUNED, THIS WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED. HOWEVER, IT WAS LATE IN A LONG DAY, THE FIRST GOOD VFR LEG OUT OF SEVERAL DAYS OF LOW IFR, AND I WAS EXPECTING A VIS TO 1 OF 2 E-W PARALLEL RWYS. SOUND FAMILIAR? I USED TO WONDER HOW SOMEONE COULD LAND AT THE WRONG ARPT--NOW I KNOW. ALL YOU HAVE TO BE IS A LITTLE COMPLACENCY AND A LITTLE TIRED.
