Narrative:

After practicing various private pilot maneuvers, I had the student make a simulated emergency landing. Altitude at that time, 2000' MSL. Because we were within 1/2 mi of 0w7, he decided to land there. We entered the traffic pattern for runway 02 (right-hand pattern) while giving our position every leg on the unicom 122.8. When we got close to the runway on final, I saw that he could easily make it. We landed. I wanted to make a touch and go, but because of the crosswind, my student lost some directional control and I aborted the takeoff. We taxied back on runway 02 while transmitting our intentions on 122.7. When we took off (this time I took the aircraft off), somebody walked up on the taxiway toward the runway. The man was waving like he wanted us to get away from the airport. Later on the ground at mtn, our home base, I realized we needed prior permission to land (I looked it up in the airport facility directory); but, because we didn't see and 'X' on the (grass) runway at 0w7, I thought it was open for operation. It was an unintentional mistake I made, but I regret it. No 'X' on the runway can still mean the airport is not available for operation. I'll double-check the airport facility directory next time again.

IT WAS AN UNINTENTIONAL MISTAKE I MADE, BUT I REGRET IT. NO 'X' ON THE RWY CAN STILL MEAN THE ARPT IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR OPERATION. I'LL DOUBLE-CHK THE ARPT FAC DIRECTORY NEXT TIME AGAIN.
