Narrative:

A new aml (aircraft maintenance log) book was started before the book that was in use was finished. This left one used log book and two log books in use and no spare book. This is not the first time I've filed a report on this subject. This is actually a common event; seen by many mechanics that I work with and they do not bother to report it because they do not think it is a big deal or are just plain lazy in my opinion. I think it is a very big deal. We are setting ourselves up to fail and maybe have a serious incident. If a mechanic and pilot fails to check the third supposedly unused log book after checking the used log book and the book in use. This is where we can miss a serious discrepancy written up and allow the aircraft to fly. This nobody wants to happen and can be easy corrected as noted below. It is too easy to start a new log book by accident or ignorance by way of our current maintenance procedures for controlling log books on the flight deck in the fdml (flight deck maintenance log). There should be only two log books in the fdml. The fully used one and the book in use. A new book should kept in the flight deck someplace; like we use to do at legacy [company]. Put it in the yellow book that would be a good place.
