Narrative:

During missed approach procedure, while flying aircraft, experienced an engine strut overheat light. During aircraft cleanup and numerous communications between captain and F/east concerning indications and checklist procedures, and communication between captain and ATC, understood clearance altitude to be 3500'. Actually cleared only to 2500' and was acknowledged by captain as 2500'. Discovered difference at 2900' when captain took brake from checklist procedures and ATC subsequently cleared aircraft to 3000'.
