Narrative:

Flying FL360 from ZZZ to ZZZ1 about 20 miles east of jct VOR severe turbulence encountered with 800 foot gain in altitude. The auto pilot kicked off and the captain took the controls; was a loss of control about 10 seconds and the total time of the event was about 30 seconds. We reported the event to ATC. Nobody suffered injuries (passengers and flight attendant's). Prior to the event we were flying in total smooth air and no radar reports about bad weather and no ATC reports about bad weather.
