Narrative:
Descending into ZZZ; scattered cloud deck around 4;300 feet. Winds gusty and variable out of the south over close terrain. Cleared for the visual approach from center and started a left pattern for runway xx backed up by the RNAV xx for reference. Terrain page active on ca (captain) side mfd. On base turn; aircraft was still descending resulting in a level off at 1;000 feet while on base. Ground track was toward terrain even though in VMC. On base to final turn to line up with runway; 'terrain; terrain; pull up' sounded resulting in an immediate go-around per company procedures. Subsequent approach was conducted from the initial approach fix to runway xx resulting in a successful approach and landing.
