Narrative:

We were approaching our destination. The arwy to the initial approach fix would have taken us 8 mi out of the way. The captain instructed me to cancel IFR so we could descend on a direct, efficient course to the airport. I noted the capts anxiety because we were getting closer and becoming too high. Between unsuccessful attempts of center and the small aircraft to establish communication, center advised us of traffic sebnd (I think) at 1 O'clock, 5 mi (I think) indicating 7000'. I cancelled IFR on the next unacknowledged center attempt to raise the small aircraft. Center received our cancellation, captain began a descent and a left turn about 20 degrees explaining that the turn was for collision avoidance (the airport was to our right). In my scan for traffic I saw a target at 1 moving to 2 O'clock about 5 mi and lower. It was no factor. The captain and I then saw a tan small aircraft B with the 'zero lift' style tip tanks passing of our wing tip in the opp direction. Our altitude was 7500' nwbnd. I do not know if this was the center issued traffic. If it was, it should have passed well of our right, or if we had not changed our heading, just off our right. The change in heading away from traffic was good (but not nearly enough) the descent was bad. Should have waited for ATC confirmation of traffic passage but who knows if ATC had that aircraft on the scope. I don't think it was. Supplemental information from acn 163062. We were flying eastbound at 7500' on arwy V27 about 15 mins after departure a twin engine turbo propeller commuter jet passed on our right side within about 300'. We believe it was on xx but were unable to identify it. It appeared that they may have taken evasive action in a bank to the left. The aircraft appeared to be descending as I passed on our right hand side westbound. Discovered as it passed through upper corner of windshield and past coplts window.

Title: LTT AND SMT PASS OPPOSITE DIRECTION. NMAC.

Narrative: WE WERE APCHING OUR DEST. THE ARWY TO THE INITIAL APCH FIX WOULD HAVE TAKEN US 8 MI OUT OF THE WAY. THE CAPT INSTRUCTED ME TO CANCEL IFR SO WE COULD DSND ON A DIRECT, EFFICIENT COURSE TO THE ARPT. I NOTED THE CAPTS ANXIETY BECAUSE WE WERE GETTING CLOSER AND BECOMING TOO HIGH. BTWN UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPTS OF CTR AND THE SMA TO ESTABLISH COM, CTR ADVISED US OF TFC SEBND (I THINK) AT 1 O'CLOCK, 5 MI (I THINK) INDICATING 7000'. I CANCELLED IFR ON THE NEXT UNACKNOWLEDGED CTR ATTEMPT TO RAISE THE SMA. CTR RECEIVED OUR CANCELLATION, CAPT BEGAN A DSNT AND A L TURN ABOUT 20 DEGS EXPLAINING THAT THE TURN WAS FOR COLLISION AVOIDANCE (THE ARPT WAS TO OUR R). IN MY SCAN FOR TFC I SAW A TARGET AT 1 MOVING TO 2 O'CLOCK ABOUT 5 MI AND LOWER. IT WAS NO FACTOR. THE CAPT AND I THEN SAW A TAN SMA B WITH THE 'ZERO LIFT' STYLE TIP TANKS PASSING OF OUR WING TIP IN THE OPP DIRECTION. OUR ALT WAS 7500' NWBND. I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS WAS THE CTR ISSUED TFC. IF IT WAS, IT SHOULD HAVE PASSED WELL OF OUR R, OR IF WE HAD NOT CHANGED OUR HDG, JUST OFF OUR R. THE CHANGE IN HDG AWAY FROM TFC WAS GOOD (BUT NOT NEARLY ENOUGH) THE DSNT WAS BAD. SHOULD HAVE WAITED FOR ATC CONFIRMATION OF TFC PASSAGE BUT WHO KNOWS IF ATC HAD THAT ACFT ON THE SCOPE. I DON'T THINK IT WAS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 163062. WE WERE FLYING EBND AT 7500' ON ARWY V27 ABOUT 15 MINS AFTER DEP A TWIN ENG TURBO PROP COMMUTER JET PASSED ON OUR R SIDE WITHIN ABOUT 300'. WE BELIEVE IT WAS ON XX BUT WERE UNABLE TO IDENT IT. IT APPEARED THAT THEY MAY HAVE TAKEN EVASIVE ACTION IN A BANK TO THE L. THE ACFT APPEARED TO BE DSNDING AS I PASSED ON OUR R HAND SIDE WBND. DISCOVERED AS IT PASSED THROUGH UPPER CORNER OF WINDSHIELD AND PAST COPLTS WINDOW.
