Narrative:
During cruise at fl 230; we encountered light chop which suddenly became severe turbulence. We were unable to hold altitude and advised ATC. We received a TA and a flight below us received a RA. Fluctuation of airspeed and altitude. Reported to ATC; got a lower altitude.I don't feel like there is anything else I could have done to avoid this.
