Narrative:
At 1000 feet on approach into mci; we were just coming out of a thin layer of clouds when we struck what appeared to be multiple birds. We heard a loud bang on the nose of the aircraft. The engines appeared to be unaffected; however; we did note a strong smell which indicated a bird(s) had been ingested by an engine. After landing; I contacted dispatch and maintenance. The aircraft was taken out of service.
