First officer's leg. Push and start were normal. We taxied to [runway] xxl; were cleared to lineup; takeoff. Just as takeoff thrust was achieved; a loud bang was heard and felt from the right engine. Aircraft veered to the right; EICAS (engine indication crew alerting system) messages were 'engine fail right;' 'engine control right;' etc. The captain immediately took control of the aircraft; maintained centerline and slowed the aircraft. We advised tower and cleared the runway; accomplished applicable checklists; [and] returned to the gate.
