Narrative:

Clearance from pit to mke was as filed (390 NM). Tower advised us to contact clearance delivery. Just as we were #1 for takeoff, first officer copied down a reroute for WX. 30 seconds later we were cleared for takeoff, not realizing the reroute was 753 NM. Continued on the new route and could not penetrate line of WX. Unable to fly new route due to fuel. Diverted to ind for refueling. Arrived mke 2 hours late. In retrospect, reroute should have been carefully checked upon receipt. We never suspected the new route to be twice the original distance. Supplemental information from acn 157430: took note of the first couple of routing points to reposition the rapid setup for departure and noted the routing started us out west instead of northwest, which made sense due to the location of the WX. WX line appeared visually and on radar about 10-15 mins out, and confirmed the difficulty of proceeding northwest. Captain by now was looking at the rest of the reroute and discovered that the new route was just short of twice the original distance and fuel would be a problem. Captain was talking to dispatch and decided to divert to ind for fueling stop. As soon as I got the clearance and checked back on with tower, we were cleared for takeoff. We were in a 'go' mode.

Title: MLG FLT CREW DEPARTED ARPT WITH INADEQUATE FUEL FOR FLT TO DESTINATION AFTER RECEIVING AN AMENDED CLRNC FOR SEVERE WX AVOIDANCE. FLT LANDS AT INTERMEDIATE ARPT FOR FUEL.

Narrative: CLRNC FROM PIT TO MKE WAS AS FILED (390 NM). TWR ADVISED US TO CONTACT CLRNC DELIVERY. JUST AS WE WERE #1 FOR TKOF, F/O COPIED DOWN A REROUTE FOR WX. 30 SECS LATER WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF, NOT REALIZING THE REROUTE WAS 753 NM. CONTINUED ON THE NEW RTE AND COULD NOT PENETRATE LINE OF WX. UNABLE TO FLY NEW RTE DUE TO FUEL. DIVERTED TO IND FOR REFUELING. ARRIVED MKE 2 HRS LATE. IN RETROSPECT, REROUTE SHOULD HAVE BEEN CAREFULLY CHKED UPON RECEIPT. WE NEVER SUSPECTED THE NEW RTE TO BE TWICE THE ORIGINAL DISTANCE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 157430: TOOK NOTE OF THE FIRST COUPLE OF RTING POINTS TO REPOSITION THE RAPID SETUP FOR DEP AND NOTED THE RTING STARTED US OUT W INSTEAD OF NW, WHICH MADE SENSE DUE TO THE LOCATION OF THE WX. WX LINE APPEARED VISUALLY AND ON RADAR ABOUT 10-15 MINS OUT, AND CONFIRMED THE DIFFICULTY OF PROCEEDING NW. CAPT BY NOW WAS LOOKING AT THE REST OF THE REROUTE AND DISCOVERED THAT THE NEW RTE WAS JUST SHORT OF TWICE THE ORIGINAL DISTANCE AND FUEL WOULD BE A PROB. CAPT WAS TALKING TO DISPATCH AND DECIDED TO DIVERT TO IND FOR FUELING STOP. AS SOON AS I GOT THE CLRNC AND CHKED BACK ON WITH TWR, WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF. WE WERE IN A 'GO' MODE.
