Narrative:

While climbing; ATC gave traffic of a cessna 182 at 4500 feet. He was maintaining visual separation. Climbing through 4000 feet; we acquired him on TCAS and visually. The first officer immediately pushed over to avoid a collision. About one or two seconds before passing 300 or so feet below the 182; we received an RA. The RA was too late to be of much help in avoiding a collision. I reported the RA and the fact that the 182 was not maintaining visual to ATC.
