Narrative:

Aircraft X checked on my frequency at FL380 and requested descent to FL340. I issued descent to FL370 and was unable lower due to aircraft Y (at FL360) approximately 3.5 nm in trail of aircraft X. After aircraft X leveled off at FL370; the pilot advised that due to an altimeter problem he was unable to maintain rvsm capability and requested lower to leave rvsm airspace. As soon as I updated his equipment suffix to reflect non-rvsm status of the flight; conflict alert was activated and separation was 'lost'. I issued a vector to provide lateral separation and as soon as possible coordinated for lower with the sectors below mine and issued descent clearance to FL280.
