Narrative:

I was teaching a CFI 1 student. I was in left seat under the hood tracking to a VOR (drk). Out of the corner of my eye I saw a multi-engine small aircraft Y at very close proximity approaching from our 1 O'clock position. I believe we saw each other at the same instant. I made a steep descending right turn while the other small aircraft Y made a climbing right turn. I believe this occurred because of inattention by both aircraft concerning collision avoidance. Since I was acting as a student to visually scan. The CFI 1 student was probably fixating on my instruments and not visually scanning effectively even though we had briefed on this before the flight.
