Narrative:

I showed up to the aircraft at the gate for the 1st flight of the day flight X service to ZZZ. Upon entering the flight deck to begin my cold & dark aircraft inspection; I found the maintenance can on the floor and several switches left in the on position; hydraulic and ptu. I followed the internal safety inspection checklist and did a normal power on. Fuel on board was 13;000 lbs.the weather conditions at the departure airport were VFR. The first officer (first officer) was the pilot flying; and I was pilot monitoring. The flight departed on time from the gate. As soon as we had pushed out the gate the tug driver informed us we were clear to start engine 1. Engine 1 was started normally and all instruments were indicating normal operation. We single-engine taxied towards runway 15L in accordance with company SOP. As we continued in our taxi; I commanded the start of engine 2; which also had a normal start and had all instruments indicating normal operation. After approximately 4 minutes; we had a clearance for take-off from runway 15L. After positive transfer of controls; the first officer started the takeoff roll and just as we were reaching V1; we received an emergency call from the flight attendant (flight attendant). Since we were in a critical phase of flight; I decided to delay answering the call until we can reach acceleration altitude and ensure the airplane was stable and at a safe altitude.upon reaching acceleration altitude; I answered the call and FA1 informed me the cabin was completely filled with smoke and passengers were extremely frightened. I ordered her to look for the source of the smoke and extinguish it if it was a fire. She informed me there was no fire; just smoke and it was hard to see thru the cabin. I told her to keep the passengers calm and I would get back to her after completing some checklists and that we would be returning to the airport.I [advised] ATC; telling them of the cabin smoke and requested vectors to come back to ZZZ1; and told them to stand-by because we need to follow some checklist and get ready for the approach. I then transferred the radios and told my first officer that he has the radios and flight controls while I reference the [emergency checklist] and QRH for smoke in the cabin. The jumpseater; who was an embraer first officer; assisted me with checklists; etc. Upon completion of the QRH and [emergency checklist]; I then made a PA announcement to the passengers informing them that other than the smoke; all was well and we were returning to the field. I asked them to remain calm and to follow the instructions of the flight attendant's. We completed the QRH and [emergency checklist] items for approach and landing and returned to the airport without further incident.after a stable visual approach; we landed and exited and stopped on the taxiway. I coordinated with my crew to execute an evacuation from the forward service door (right side) because the fire truck had brought the air stairs to that side; we didn't have to deploy any slides. Our crew safely evacuated the passengers without injury nor incident.
